A Modern Take

Best of Class - Large Bath

May/June 2013

Clients with a dated Arlington home loved its location but wished to modernize the interiors. Architects Mark Lawrence and Elizabeth Emerson tackled the job of updating the master suite, which meant enlarging and improving the existing master bath. To bring in light, they added skylights and transom panels that admit daylight without compromising privacy. The transom panels are custom-etched to match the pattern of the dual-glazed ceramic tiles that clad the walls, unifying the space. The new design features a separate W.C., glass-enclosed dual showers, a separate area for the soaking tub and a double vanity with twin vessel sinks. Behind the soaking tub, a wall of slanted bamboo panels creates warmth and visual interest.
