Folly Quarter Manor
|
Idyllic Folly Quarter Manor has seen its share of history. In 1723, it was part of a 10,000-acre tract of land granted to the ancestors of Charles Carroll, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Carroll lived on what was then known as Folly Quarter Farm, in a 300-foot-long mansion built by his father; Carroll, who was also Maryland’s first Senator and a well-known crusader against titles, high salaries and “kingly trappings,” maintained his office in the home’s library. Neither this original mansion, nor another called Folly Quarter—built by Carroll when in his nineties—survives.
Over the years, the initial 10,000-acre tract was divided and changed hands numerous times. Nevertheless, today’s acreage is as pastoral and picturesque as ever. A local historian, writing in 1905, said of the then-1,000-acre property, “Folly Quarter farm is…fair and beautiful to look upon.
Billows of round topped hills guard fertile valleys…. and sleek fat cattle contentedly munch fodder in large stable yards.” The view from the master bedroom suite of the luxurious manor house that now graces the property is strikingly similar to this description—the hills are still billowing, the valleys still fertile. Only the cattle have been replaced; now horses graze the pastures of this magnificent equestrian estate.
Currently on the market for $17 million, Folly Quarter Manor now sprawls over 54 acres and includes a large and graciously appointed manor house, an 1,800-square-foot guest cottage, a 10-stall horse barn, pool, tennis court, gardens and assorted outbuildings. Natural features include a pond and a trout stream.
Built in 1936 by the owners of Pimlico Race Track, today’s manor house features more than 8,000 square feet of luxurious living space encompassing six bedrooms, five full baths, three half baths, a family room with a wet bar that opens to the patio and pool area, six fireplaces and a gourmet kitchen with state-of-the-art appliances. Old World handcrafted details abound, from the marble floors to the hand-milled mahogany woodwork to the built-in bookcases and fine architectural details.
The property is located midway between Washington, DC, and Baltimore in Ellicott City, Maryland, at 3925 Folly Quarter Road.
