Art by the Yard: Women Design Mid-Century Britain

Telling Stories: Norman Rockwell from the Collections of George Lucas and Steven Spielberg

Two of America’s best-known modern filmmakers—George Lucas and Steven Spielberg—recognized a kindred spirit in artist Norman Rockwell and acquired significant collections of his work. An exhibit at the American Art Museum showcases 57 pieces from their private collections, exploring connections between the movies and Rockwell’s portrayal of American life.

On the Mark: Contemporary Works on Paper

The Baltimore Museum of Art recently acquired eight prints and drawings that show how a single element, when multiplied or magnified, can take on new meaning. The highlight of this exhibit is Ellsworth Kelly’s monumental print, “River II,” along with works by Tara Donovan, Ann Hamilton and Vik Muniz.

The Washington Design Center has created a spacious new show-house venue on its fifth floor. Designers Olvia Demetriou, David Herchik, Kelley Proxmire, Frank Babb Randolph, Michael Roberson, Nestor Santa-Cruz, Victor Shargai and Rita St. Clair—all members of the Center’s Hall of Fame—have created chic rooms using the vast array of furnishings and materials available in its showrooms.

Chuck Close Prints: Process & Collaboration

American portraitist Chuck Close is renowned for his innovations in printmaking, working varied techniques and materials from woodcut and mezzotint to linoleum cut. This exhibit at the Corcoran Gallery of Art features more than 100 finished works, proofs and objects by Close, revealing the vitality and experimentation that drive his creative process.

Edvard Munch: Master Prints

This exhibit at the National Gallery of Art spotlights the central ideas and accomplishments of 20th-century Norwegian artist Edvard Munch and includes 60 of his rare prints and hand-colored variations.

Dutch “Golden Age” Paintings

What is believed to be the world’s only privately owned painting by Johannes Vermeer will be on view at the Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk, Virginia, as part of an exhibit  of works by many of the Netherlands' greatest 17th-century artists. The painting, titled "Young Woman Seated at a Virginal"  was accepted as a å genuine Vermeer in 2008 after 10 years of rigorous study.

Sixth Annual Plein Air-Easton! Competition

More than 50 of the country’s top plein air painters have been selected to take part in in the Sixth Annual Plein Air–Easton! Competition. A record number of artists from around the world—234 in all—entered the competition this year. Participants will paint all over Easton en plein air (French for “in the open air”); $11,000 in prizes will be awarded to the winners.

The largest free arts festival in the country with at least 350,000 expected attendees, Artscape in Baltimore features more than 150 artists, fashion designers and craftspeople plus live concerts and performing arts. Advancing Abstraction in Modern Sculpture

Yves Klein: With the Void, Full Powers
Through September 12
French artist Yves Klein was an international sensation until his untimely death in 1962 at the age of 34. The first major retrospective of his work in the U.S., this exhibit at the Hirshhorn includes examples of Klein’s major series, including his blue monochromes. Robert Ryman: Variations & Improvisations

Pousette-Dart: Predominantly White Paintings

This exhibit at the Phillips Collection displays paintings created nearly without paint by Richard Pousette-Dart in the early 1950s. Unlike his richly saturated earlier work, these luminous creations in graphite and oil are both complex and spare. www.phillipscollection.org

 

Western Loudoun County Artists Studio Tour

Japanese Cloisonné Enamels

This exhibit at The Walters Art Museum in Baltimore spotlights the Stephen W. Fisher collection of Japanese cloisonné enamels, comprised largely of pieces created from 1880 to 1920 during Japan’s “golden age” of decorative art production. Show Expanding Horizons: Recent Additions to the Drawings Collection

Textiles Recycled/Reimagined

The Baltimore Museum of Art presents a dozen unique objects made wholly or partly from reused and/or repurposed materials. American Modernism: The Shein Collection

The Art of Living: Textile Furnishings from the Permanent Collection

The Art of Gaman: Arts and Crafts from the Japanese American Internment Camps, 1942-1946

This exhibit at the Renwick Gallery showcases arts and crafts made by Japanese Americans in U.S. internment camps during World War II.
