On the Bookshelf The Spirit of Place
Fifteen years ago, DC architect Travis Price, FAIA, created the Spirit of Place/Spirit of Design program at Catholic University. Led by Price, the program sends an international team of architecture students on design/build expeditions to remote locales; students are asked to design and construct a project in nine days, while focusing on local culture and ecology. Price’s book, The Mythic Modern: Architectural Expeditions into the Spirit of Place, chronicles these excursions around the world, from Machu Picchu to Finland, exploring indigenous peoples, striking landscapes and cultural legacies through the lens of modern architectural design. Oro Editions, Washington, DC, June 2013. $65.

Classically Trained
Award-winning DC-based interior designer Thomas Pheasant balances a classical sensibility with a fresh, timeless vibe in houses all over the world. Traditional elements like pilasters and crown moldings combine with modern details like a scroll coffee table or a room screen of ribbed, translucent glass. In Thomas Pheasant: Simply Serene, the designer illustrates his elegant yet livable approach through examples of his work—which recently included the redesign of Blair House, the President’s guesthouse on Pennsylvania Avenue. Rizzoli Books, New York, NY, October 2013. $60.

A Modern Perspective
In his third book, In House: McInturff Architects, well-known Bethesda architect Mark McInturff, FAIA, showcases his recent work, highlighting innovations in craftsmanship and modern design. The book covers residential design and architecture projects across the Eastern U.S., ranging from a modern twist on a country home in Virginia to a sustainable house on the shore of the Chesapeake Bay. Images Publishing, Australia, September 2013. $49.95.
