For one week each fall, Washington, DC, becomes the canvas on which photographers from around the world showcase the inspiring, exciting and innovative work they do. FotoWeekDC, a festival of photography in all its forms, will be held this year from November 9 to 18. It offers dozens of exhibitions, seminars, lectures, workshops, photo book displays and receptions in DC, Maryland and Virginia.

Now in its fifth year, FotoWeekDC’s mission is to provide exposure for the very best in fine art photography, photojournalism and the work of emerging artists by offering access to a wide audience —40,000 attended in 2011. FotoWeekDC’s non-profit partners include National Geographic, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Smithsonian Institution and various local art galleries.

Events will engage both professional and amateur photographers alike. On offer this year: interactive seminars at the Warner Theater on topics like industry knowledge, marketing and photojournalism; an architectural photography exhibit by Maxwell MacKenzie at the American Institute of Architects; a panel on fine art versus commercial photography at the Torpedo Factory; and portfolio reviews by industry professionals. Visit fotoweekdc.org for a full list of FotoWeekDC events.

Celebrating Craft This fall, craft enthusiasts can come in out of the cold for the 25th annual Washington Craft Show at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in DC, showcasing works from nearly 200 of the country’s top contemporary craft artists. Featured media will include ceramics, glass, fiber, decorative and wearable art, wood-turned and carved objects, furniture, metals, jewelry and more.

This year’s show also celebrates the 50th anniversary of the creation of studio art glass in America with events that pay tribute to Harvey K. Littleton, who founded America’s studio glass movement. These include a special exhibit by the Maurine Littleton Gallery (exhibiting contemporary artists in glass, metal and ceramics); a lecture on Littleton moderated by Elizabeth Blair of NPR; and a book signing by Joan Falconer Byrd, author of Harvey K. Littleton: A Life in Glass.

Other events will include a lecture by glass artist Josh Simpson; a talk by a curator from The Textile Museum about contemporary fiber art; a fashion show featuring the work of fashion and jewelry designers; and screenings of A Not So Still Life: The Ginny Ruffner Story.
