Great Falls 2017 Studio Tour @ Great Falls, Virginia

Fifty members of Great Falls Studios—an artists’ collective—will open their studios for self-guided tours. Artists include painters, potters, photographers, jewelry-makers, fiber artists, wood-carvers, sculptors and more; the event is sponsored by the local design/build firm Sun Design, which will hold an open house to showcase a recent kitchen renovation.

Maryland Home & Garden Show @ Timonium Fairgrounds

The Fall 2017 event will present more than 300 home-improvement and outdoor-living exhibits by professional landscapers and contractors, as well as a juried crafts show displaying the work of more than 100 artisans. This year, landscapers will draw inspiration from international trends for their garden displays.

Lumia: Thomas Wilfred and the Art of Light @ Smithsonian American Art Museum

Light-art pioneer Thomas Wilfred was considered radical for his mid-20th-century works fusing light and technology. Now, an exhibition of his art, which he termed “lumia,” resurrects his work—long relegated to storage because of difficulty maintaining it. Fifteen light compositions are displayed in their 
original form.

Academy Craft Show @ Academy Art Museum

More than 70 artisans will display crafts ranging from basketry, fiber, glass and jewelry to metal, sculpture and wood at the Academy Art Museum’s 20th annual craft show in Easton, Maryland. This year’s theme, “Fired Up,” celebrates the art of ceramics with a weekend-long Raku demonstration and an exhibit of works by well-known ceramicist Bennett Bean.

Vermeer and the Masters of Genre Painting @ National Gallery of Art

This exhibition brings together nearly 70 Flemish paintings dating from the mid-1650s to about 1680. Works by Johannes Vermeer (A Lady Writing is above) and contemporaries such as Jan Steen and Gerard ter Borch are juxtaposed by theme, motif and composition, and illustrate the rivalry that existed among the artists.

A three-day scheduled event that invites interior designers, design enthusiasts and shoppers alike to visit 21 participating design and home furnishings stores for new collection launches, trunk shows and design consultations.

EVENT PASSPORT: Pick up an event passport at a participating showroom and bring it with you as you explore three days of interior design events. At the end of the event, or by Nov. 7th, drop it at any participating retailer for a chance to win one of many prizes with a minimum of five showroom stickers.

Prizes include a queen bed by Duxiana, leather stool from Calligaris, and home accessories from B&B Italia, Baker Furniture, BoConcept, Bulthaup, Circa Lighting, Design Within Reach, Janus et Cie, Jonathan Adler, Resource Furniture, Scavolini and Waterworks.

COCKTAIL CRAWL: The event will officially kick off with a Cocktail Crawl on Thursday, Nov. 2 from 5 pm – 8 pm. Tamayo: The New York Years @ Smithsonian American Art Museum

Mexican modernist Rufino Tamayo (left, in a portrait by Irving Penn) is the subject of an exhibit tracing his artistic development from the 1920s to 1949, when he lived and worked in New York. Forty-two lush, colorful works, ranging from urban-themed paintings to dream-like canvases, are on display.

Mark Bradford: Pickett’s Charge @ Hirshhorn Museum

A 19th-century cyclorama, on view at Gettysburg National Military Park, inspired artist Mark Bradford’s monumental installation. Depicting the final charge of the Battle of Gettysburg in a colored-paper collage, the installation is a series of eight abstract paintings, each more than 45 feet long, which will encircle the third level of the museum for a panoramic effect.

The 10th annual FotoWeekDC celebrates photography at locations throughout the city with more than 150 exhibitions, competitions and programs. The works of photographers from all over the world are showcased at galleries including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum and the Carnegie Institution for Science.
