Barnes Vanze Architects translates discerning clients’ needs and desires into beautiful, livable spaces. Founders Anthony Barnes and Stephen Vanze work in studio with senior associates Melanie Giordano, Michael Patrick, Ellen Hatton and Wayne Adams, who oversee a talented staff of architects and designers. Together, they create homes that reflect their owners’ tastes and values, while responding to the unique characteristics of the properties on which they’re built.
“We strive to know our clients well as people,” Barnes says. “We look at how they live and their values. We are not selling a point of view, except that good design, regardless of style, is important.”
Exposure to a range of cultures, styles and methods has informed each partner’s approach. “Our training—in school and in practice— as well as extensive travel experience, allows us to draw from a variety of inspirational sources,” Vanze observes.
Barnes Vanze has received many accolades from professional peer groups. These include the prestigious John Russell Pope Award in 2017 for an addition to a home Pope himself designed in 1932. That project also received an award of excellence from AIA Northern Virginia. In 2016, AIA Northern Virginia recognized a modern renovation of a glass-enclosed pool house and party space.
