As a child growing up in Paris and Madrid, Charles Owen cultivated an appreciation for European-influenced design that he brings to his work as president of Fine Landscapes. Owen founded the company in 1978 to create outdoor living areas that reflect clients’ aesthetic vision and complement the architecture of their homes. Today, the firm employs a staff of 45 and boasts a portfolio that represents a wide range of projects—from simple gardens to complex installations incorporating water features, outdoor kitchens and pool houses.
“We are often called on prior to construction to help site a house and its amenities, then lay out the overall design of the terrain,” notes Owen. “We provide the essential factors to a properly designed landscape: balance and transitions between indoor and outdoor spaces.”
In addition to site design, the company’s expertise encompasses all the other facets of a successful project, including hardscape, outdoor illumination, water works, pavilion design and horticulture. Owen and his team study plant species to help bring innovation and diversity to every job.
Fine Landscapes has completed numerous high-profile projects in the Mid-Atlantic region and abroad. In 2019, the firm won a prestigious Land and Tree Conservation Award from Fairfax County, Virginia, as well as a craftsmanship award from the Washington Building Congress.
