Though he founded The Drawing Board, Inc., in 1991, architect David Miles has spent more than five decades in the field. Throughout his career, Miles says, he has derived the greatest satisfaction from helping clients create their dream homes.

Over the past 14 years, the firm has welcomed three additional principal architects—each of whom brings a unique perspective and passion to the table. “I view this infusion of fresh energy into the company as its second founding,” Miles reports.

Today David Miles, along with his son Peter Miles, Joey Barrick and Filipe Silva, work as an ensemble cast to orchestrate desirable, innovative designs for their clients. Their diverse backgrounds inform the partners’ oeuvre. Born and raised in Brazil, Silva brings an admiration for Brazilian modernism and an international perspective to the fore. Barrick’s extensive travels have exposed him to many significant built environments—influences that inform the firm’s practice. And Peter Miles, who spent countless hours in his father’s studio as a boy, knows how to listen to all stakeholders after collaborating in numerous international design competitions.

The firm’s principals-only approach means that one of the four partners handles every aspect of a design, from initial client meetings to design sketches and detailing. “All projects involve teamwork, and our decades of experience provide us with a reserve of associates to bring in as needed,” explains Barrick.

Designs by The Drawing Board, Inc., have won awards from Annapolis Home and Home & Design, as well as a 2022 Excellence in Design Award from the AIA’s Chesapeake Bay chapter.
