Since Jim Burton joined Page Carter to form Carter+Burton Architecture in 1997, he and his colleagues have been at the forefront of the sustainable design movement. They focus on new-home design as well as renovations and additions, interior design, landscape design, and commercial work. “Our projects demonstrate the process of blending site, program, innovation, and craft,” says Burton. “Energy efficiency, air quality, eco-friendly building materials, and controlled natural light, combined with thoughtful design, are the cornerstones of our approach.”
Burton and his team emphasize collaboration, working closely with artisans and other design professionals to understand clients and context and realize the best possible solutions on every project. “We care deeply about connecting a house and its interior spaces to a site and work hard to make those spaces comfortable and inspiring,” he reflects. “Design elements that inspire storytelling and a sense of spirit and place work hand in hand with the architecture.”
The firm recently received a Northern Virginia AIA award and a Washingtonian Design Award for its DC row house project and Virginia river residence, respectively. Its work has been featured in Architecture Today: Houses by Loft Publishing and Architecture Now!, Volume 10, by Taschen.
