Lorena Checa, AIA, LEED AP

Lorena Checa traces her interest in architecture back to her  native Peru and a visit she and her father made to an architect—as clients—when she was 10 years old. “Imagining our finished home ignited my desire to be an architect,” she recalls. Checa later studied architecture at Catholic University and launched her own firm in 1992.

Growing up, the architect forged a deep connection to nature that informs her focus on sustainable design. “I lived in Lima when it was known as ‘The City of Gardens,’” she explains. “Homes were integrated with gardens and daylight. Later, living in Europe  refined my respect for architectural history and modern design.”

Today, CHECA Architects works closely with clients to integrate sustainable architecture and elegant interior design. Checa views the design process as a co-creation between the client and her highly integrated team of architects, engineers, landscape architects and builders. “We create harmonious spaces that celebrate natural beauty and lift the human spirit,” she says.

In 2003, Checa was awarded the Presidential Citation for  Sustainable Design by AIA DC. The firm recently made the 2017 Best of Houzz list. Checa’s work has appeared in Home & Design, Green Building & Design, Architecture DC and The Washington Post.
