Wiedemann Architects, LLC

Greg Wiedemann, FAIA

Associates: Felix Gonzalez, AIA, and Barbara Sweeney, AIA

For Greg Wiedemann, architecture was an ideal career choice, allowing him to combine his many interests—art, engineering, mathematics, and urban studies—into one professional pursuit and leading to a master’s degree in architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design.

Founded in 1984, Wiedemann Architects now has studios in Bethesda and on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. Its talented and experienced staff has been with the firm for more than 20 years—some were even Wiedemann’s students when he taught architecture.

Before starting a project, the principal takes a disciplined yet astute approach to gauging client needs and expectations. “We begin by asking our clients about their memories of home and their aspirations,” he notes. “What attracted them to the property and what do they see as challenges? We guide them through each phase, answering questions and explaining what to anticipate.”

He also seeks to create lasting solutions. “Sustainability and resilience are inseparable from good design,” he contends. “It’s critical to develop solutions that reduce energy use, take advantage of natural lighting and ventilation, promote the wise use of materials and consider a long life cycle. Resiliency and respect for the natural world are paramount.”

Wiedemann Architects has been recognized with more than 100 national, regional and local design awards, including 36 AIA Design Awards. In recent years, the firm has received design awards from AIA Delaware, AIA Chesapeake, AIA Maryland and AIA Northern Virginia. Wiedemann was elevated to the AIA College of Fellows, a distinction earned by only two percent of its members, for design excellence. The firm’s work has been featured in more than 200 articles and publications, nationwide and abroad.
