MCDStudio Architecture + Design

Matthew McDonald, AIA | Jennifer Verbeke, AIA, LEED AP

After studying architecture at universities with strong, design-driven curricula, partners Matthew McDonald and Jennifer Verbecke (graduates of Virginia Tech and Carnegie Mellon, respectively) honed their skills at architecture studios as well as design/build firms before launching MCDStudio 10 years ago. This background left each principal with a solid understanding of both the design and construction phases of any project.

Today, the four-person firm focuses on residential projects in a wide array of types and styles in the DC Metro area and around the country. The partners value collaboration—both internally and with clients and industry partners. “We set aside our own egos and listen to our clients to help turn their dreams into reality with our guidance, expertise and creative thinking,” McDonald explains. Recent projects range from kitchen remodels and wine cellars to new homes and vacation retreats.

He and Verbeke leverage the latest 3D and virtual-reality technology to help homeowners visualize what a space can look like. “By using these tools early on in the process,” says Verbeke, “we can make better-informed decisions that ensure a smoother construction process down the line.”

The principals spend time giving back to the profession and community. Verbeke is currently an AIA Maryland board member while McDonald serves on an advisory board for Virginia Tech’s school of architecture. MCDStudio recently won an Award of Merit from the Potomac Valley AIA.

As McDonald reflects, “Our core value is that the best design is the one that makes our clients’ lives better and brings them joy through the spaces we help create.”
