MCDStudio Architecture + Design

After studying architecture at universities with strong, design-driven curricula (he at Virginia Tech and she at Carnegie Mellon), Matthew McDonald and Jennifer Verbeke honed their skills at architecture studios as well as design/build firms before launching MCDStudio. These experiences gave each principal a solid understanding of both the design and construction phases.

Now approaching its tenth anniversary, MCDStudio has created a niche as a boutique residential architecture firm in the DC Metro area but also works with clients throughout the country (Idaho, Colorado, Utah).

The four-person firm focuses on custom projects ranging from wine cellars and kitchen remodels to entire residences and vacation homes. “We enjoy the variety in scale and divergence of design opportunities,” Verbeke asserts.

The partners value collaboration—both in the firm and with clients and industry partners. “We set aside our egos and listen to our clients to help turn their dreams into reality with our guidance, expertise and creative thinking,” McDonald reflects. “Our core value is that the best designs make clients’ lives better than they were before.”

He and Verbeke also leverage the latest 3D and virtual reality technology to help homeowners visualize what their space can look like. “By using these tools early on in the process,” says Verbeke, “we can make better-informed decisions that ensure a smoother construction process down the line.”

Most recently, MCDStudio won a Potomac Valley AIA award of merit for a backyard retreat that converted a dilapidated garage into a tranquil yoga studio.
