More than 20 local designers partnered with showrooms to conceive inspiring tabletop creations for the Washington Design Center’s 2022 Holiday Fete. Displays were unveiled at a festive reception on December 6th and remained on view through December 16th. Home & Design sponsored the event, which benefitted Children’s National Hospital.
The Custom Residential Architects Network (CRAN) of AIA-Capital Area held its 2022 holiday party on December 8th at Architessa in DC’s Friendship Heights. Guests celebrated the season and browsed the chic showroom’s latest tile, stone and surface offerings. Home & Design was the media sponsor.

The owners of a 1978 home in Locust Grove, Virginia, wished to modernize their kitchen with better functionality and storage. Their goal? A “modern cottage” feel with Craftsman features and improved views of their surrounding property.
Reico Kitchen & Bath brought their vision to reality. Together with Cristifulli Custom Homes, they created an open plan that flows into the adjacent family room, adding windows and an island for additional storage. Merillat maple cabinetry is combined with Emerstone quartz countertops and a ceramic subway-tile backsplash. A Kohler farmhouse sink, reclaimed woods and mixed metals convey a vintage vibe.

KONST SieMatic combined charming period elements with a luxurious, modern aesthetic in a Northwest DC row house kitchen. The owner requested improved flow, increased storage and a strong “wow” factor as the centerpiece of the main floor. Matte black lacquer cabinetry from SieMatic now conceals a hard-working integrated appliance wall. Matching cabinets, with illuminated bronze channels to spotlight the quartz-topped prep island, create copious storage in a convenient footprint. A custom under-stair wine room features glass-panel entry doors, pullout wire wine shelves and a triangular pegboard that displays additional bottles in style.

The owners of a cramped kitchen in Springfield, Virginia, tapped Capitol Design Build for an overhaul. In addition to enlarging the space, they requested improved function and flow, and an airy, farmhouse aesthetic.
A design team headed by Capitol Design Build’s Rosa Flores removed a wall separating the kitchen and dining area from the family room, got rid of an obtrusive peninsula in the kitchen and shifted a closet by 10 inches. These structural changes created space for a large central island. Storage now abounds, with an appliance wall that integrates double ovens and pantry storage; a sink wall that affords plenty of space for food prep on expansive countertops; and a wall anchoring the dining area that combines further storage and counterspace.
A palette of gray-blue and white with rustic wood accents conveys the farmhouse sensibility the owners wanted in a kitchen that easily accommodates cooking for a crowd. Ceiling-height white subway tile with gray grout and white quartz countertops add a clean-lined, modern edge.

As part of a whole-house renovation in Ruxton, Maryland, Eisenbrandt Companies transformed the outmoded kitchen in a warm classic style. The design team introduced an airy, open plan that flows into the adjacent living/dining area. Perfecting the details, handcrafted inset cabinets topped with Taj-Mahal quartzite counters are dressed with Bronze-finished hardware bringing an upscale contrast to the stainless appliances. A frosted pocket door in the butler’s pantry can be closed to conceal clutter, sinks and dishwashers in both the kitchen and pantry make for easy entertaining.

While reimagining the interiors of an abode on Virginia’s Lake Anna, Bonnie Ammon tackled the 1990s kitchen, dominated by a tiered, L-shaped island beneath an obtrusive bulkhead. “The new vision was clean lines, timeless materials and tons of storage,” says Ammon, who removed the bulkhead and traded out the problematic island for one 10-foot-long with a cooktop, food prep and seating for eight.
Welcome additions include a huge walk-in pantry; a sleek bar area that replaced an unused desk; and Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances. Custom cabinetry is paired with marble countertops and a ceramic-tile backsplash. Armac hardware and Visual Comfort pendants lend pizazz.

Clients with a vacation home on Hilton Head Island wanted to channel a little of its casual beach vibe in their permanent residence in McLean. During a renovation of the main floor by Bowers Design Build, they requested neutral, calming tones in the new kitchen—along with more practical changes: increased cooking and entertainment space, better storage and a central island where the family of four could gather for quick meals, homework or just to keep the cook company.
Because the owners rarely used the formal spaces in the house, Bowers converted the large living room into an intimate combination dining and sitting room. The former dining room and kitchen were combined to create a spacious, well-organized kitchen that answers all their needs. Crystal Cabinets are topped with Calacatta Valentini polished quartz. A ceramic backsplash by Roca Tile, satin nickel hardware and Circa Lighting pendants complete the space, which conveys the serene, understated feel the owners desired.

The owners of a home in Rockville tapped Jack Rosen Custom Kitchens to transform their dated and dysfunctional kitchen into a stylish space where they could comfortably cook and entertain. Headed by Stephanie Fried, the design team reconfigured the layout around a large island with room for gathering, food prep and casual meals. The breakfast nook features a beverage bar and wine fridge. A walk-in pantry and seldom-used desk made way for an appliance wall and storage; an appliance garage keeps clutter at bay. The cooktop, which took up space on the island, was traded for a range that anchors the rear wall of the kitchen. An elegant custom hood clad in white-painted wood creates an attractive focal point above it.
The clients specified a traditional, Old-World aesthetic characterized by glass-fronted cabinets from Elmwood Cabinetry with decorative edging and leaded mullion details. Classic design elements abound, from mitered-edge Cambria countertops and marble backsplash from Architessa to brick floors in a herringbone pattern and a fireclay undermount sink by Rohl paired with Waterstone polished-brass fixtures. A palette of crisp white and shades of taupe and gray conveys a look of understated sophistication.

A kitchen in Hamilton, Virginia, needed work. The original layout was claustrophobic and poorly laid out, and the clients wanted better function and an updated look. They hired Abbey Design + Remodel for the job.
The design team cut back the wall that separated the kitchen from the living room to create a sense of openness. The range wall shifted to make room for a walk-in pantry behind it. An obtrusive peninsula made way for a large central island that offers plenty of room to work as well as a space for family and friends to gather. The improved layout also created a more efficient work triangle. The relocated range wall now provides a focal point.
Floor-to-ceiling Koch cabinetry with Top Knobs hardware features a row of transom cabinets near the ceiling that showcases the owners’ pottery collection. A Thermador appliance package and a Kohler apron-front sink contribute to the high-end feel of the space. Quartz countertops and a backsplash of glossy-white Lungarno waterjet mosaic tile completes the look.

While a custom home masterminded by architecture firm WCRA was under construction in McLean, J. Paul Lobkovich and Emily Neifeld of Lobkovich were tapped to collaborate on the expansive kitchen with interior designer Tracy Morris. The mandate was “to create areas within the larger kitchen that would be organic, family-friendly, ordered and beautiful,” recalls Neifeld. “Function ruled the day.”
The design team conceived zones to accommodate the family’s needs. The front, or public, zone where the family gathers is anchored by a range wall with a statement hood of blackened stainless steel trimmed in brass and lined with integrated LED lights. Behind that wall, a separate zone concealed from the main kitchen makes cleanup easy; a walk-in pantry is easily accessible from that area. A kids’ zone for studying is defined by a slatted wall while an additional desk is dedicated to management of household functions.
Signature Custom Cabinetry combines cabinets in Benjamin Moore’s Hale Navy with natural wood cabinets in stained, glazed hickory. The countertops are Caesarstone and the backsplash on the range wall is quartzite. A Parsons-style, counter-height table made of ash provides seating at the island.

Bethesda homeowners turned to Josh Hildreth Interiors to devise an overhaul of their kitchen, dining area and pantry. “We gutted the spaces and reimagined them with a 19th-century-barn aesthetic,” says founder Josh Hildreth, who conveyed the desired look via vintage and artisanal architectural features. Antique chestnut columns and beams embellish the kitchen ceiling, which is clad in wire-brushed, reclaimed shiplap oak; the pantry and dining area ceiling panels are made of V-groove ash. The same chestnut clads existing structural columns that have been reduced to less obtrusive proportions.
Antique stone flooring imported from the Cotswolds distinguishes the pantry, and hand-painted French tiles create a focal point above the range. Swedish antiques are interspersed with Wood-Mode kitchen cabinetry and Brookhaven pantry cabinets (both sourced through Aidan Design) to conjure a collected-over-time look.
A second door to the pantry improved circulation throughout the refinished space, which now features an attractive approach from the garage (the home’s main point of entry) and a workspace for flower arranging. A new fireplace beckons from the dining area, where an 18th-century Swedish chandelier hangs above the table.
