Advice on designing the perfect home by the bay

Ask the Pros: Interior Design How do you capitalize on a home’s waterfront setting in your work?

Fitzsimmons Design specializes in decorating the interiors of homes on the bay, ocean or various lakes in the region; 75 percent of our clients own homes on the water. In our practice, we emphasize the importance of working with the architecture of a space while framing the views with the interior components such as furniture and window treatments. Of course, it’s important to distinguish between obstructing and framing views: Large, floral draperies on your windows will really compete with the water views and be very distracting.

We also take care to design with a more relaxed vibe that suits the waterfront lifestyle. We use natural materials like wood, stone and glass, and keep interiors casual, comfortable, tailored and sophisticated. —Gina Fitzsimmons, ASID, Fitzsimmons Design Associates, Annapolis, Maryland
