Ballard Mensua was hired to update a 1913 residence in DC’s Cleveland Park by realtor Hans Wydler and his wife Ginny, who is passionate about interior design. The plan called for an exterior makeover as well as a major expansion that would more than double its square footage and create a host of modern amenities.
One of the challenges was to design a light and airy, transitional home that would still maintain the historic charm of the existing structure. To achieve this goal, the team sourced antique oak beams, Belgian oak floors, and custom iron railings. The exterior brick was painted so the additions would blend in with the original. The home now encompasses formal living and dining rooms, an eat-in kitchen, a sun room, five bedrooms and a rec room.
