Meghan Browne collaborated with designer Mary Jo Donohue on a Bethesda kitchen enriched by a detailed lighting plan.

A Warm Glow

Artful illumination is critical to any kitchen design, says Meghan Browne of Jennifer Gilmer Kitchen & Bath. Below are her criteria for the perfect lighting plan.

  • Recessed lighting should be well-spaced in all highly trafficked walkways and over the countertops and island as needed.
  • Under-cabinet lighting is crucial for food prep and also provides a nice ambient glow.
  • After you’ve covered those bases, you can get really creative. I love interior cabinet lighting for displaying items. Sconces and picture lights mounted to kitchen cabinetry can create a wonderful sense of warmth.
  • And last: The pendants over the island are always the fun cherry on top!
