While a custom home masterminded by architecture firm WCRA was under construction in McLean, J. Paul Lobkovich and Emily Neifeld of Lobkovich were tapped to collaborate on the expansive kitchen with interior designer Tracy Morris. The mandate was “to create areas within the larger kitchen that would be organic, family-friendly, ordered and beautiful,” recalls Neifeld. “Function ruled the day.”
The design team conceived zones to accommodate the family’s needs. The front, or public, zone where the family gathers is anchored by a range wall with a statement hood of blackened stainless steel trimmed in brass and lined with integrated LED lights. Behind that wall, a separate zone concealed from the main kitchen makes cleanup easy; a walk-in pantry is easily accessible from that area. A kids’ zone for studying is defined by a slatted wall while an additional desk is dedicated to management of household functions.
Signature Custom Cabinetry combines cabinets in Benjamin Moore’s Hale Navy with natural wood cabinets in stained, glazed hickory. The countertops are Caesarstone and the backsplash on the range wall is quartzite. A Parsons-style, counter-height table made of ash provides seating at the island.
