On-trend wood slats were part of a recent bath remodel by Gilmer.
Hottest kitchen or bath trend?
Wood slats on walls and ceilings are really trending right now. This bath combines teak-slat walls with millwork in a moisture-resistant melamine that looks like Shou Sugi Ban—a scorched-wood finish that originated in Japan.
Most exotic getaway?
Elephant Watch Camp in Kenya is a very romantic spot. The luxurious tents are equipped with king-size beds and colorful fabric suspended from the ceiling. Breakfast is served outside overlooking the Ewaso Nyiro River.
What film set speaks to your inner designer?
The kitchen designed by Nancy Meyers in Something’s Gotta Give stood out when I saw the movie years ago and several clients have come in with pictures saying that they want a kitchen just like it. It definitely has staying power.
Latest pendant crush?
My new favorite is Hector Finch’s Globe Prism Light, which interior designer Lynn Tanger sourced for a recent project. (Find at Rue IV.)
What recent read did you love?
Hank Wesselman’s Spiritwalker, Medicinemaker and Visionseeker captivated me because they were written by an anthropologist who has had mystical experiences. I attended one of his workshops at Esalen Institute in Big Sur and it was an amazing experience.
Go-to DC dining spot?
I love The Capital Grille. Every dish I’ve had there, including the porcini-rubbed bone-in ribeye, is great.
