Wide and Universal Theatre

Sydney Harman Hall, the Shakespeare Theatre Company’s new F Street venue, opened in October with dramatic fanfare. Located in a new 11-story office building, Harman Hall is distinguished by a three-story glass bay that projects eight feet over the sidewalk below. The glass-enclosed lobby (pictured here) engages passersby along F Street and envelops the theatre itself. Clad on the outside in an opaque shell of Venetian plaster, the theatre virtually floats in the space, in acoustic—and aesthetic—isolation from its surroundings.
