Home & Design

It is hard to fathom that this 25-acre waterfront property in Easton, replete with lush gardens, statuary, outbuildings, a pool and a tennis court, was once nothing but farmland. “It was all just soybean fields,” recollects landscape architect Richard Arentz, who answered the call of its suburban Maryland-based owners to transform four acres surrounding their vacation home on the undeveloped parcel into an al fresco retreat for both immediate and extended family to enjoy over weekends and holidays.

Besides expansive views of the picturesque Miles River, what excited Arentz most was “the calm energy of the site,” he observes. “You don’t really see any other houses from it, so it feels like you’re on the water by yourself. The location has a really calming effect.”

That effect starts at the sweeping driveway, which was designed to establish an immediate sense of place and a feeling of tranquility as visitors approach and encounter their first water views. “There was a lot of thought given to the entrance drive—the sense of arrival and letting people understand that they’re actually on a peninsula,” Arentz explains.

Once up the drive, the sprawling, Shingle-style residence comes into view, adorned with a columned pediment and fronted by a courtyard rimmed in clipped hornbeam hedges, American boxwood and expanses of bottlebrush buckeye. Looking out from the nearby columned pergola, the eye is arrested by a dramatic focal point: a striking sculpture of a goose in flight by Washington, DC, sculptor John Dreyfuss. Set atop a pedestal and surrounded by lush greenery, “it just feels of the place,” says Arentz. The sculpture also draws the eye to the water beyond.

A main feature of the property is the formal lawn facing south toward the river. It flows out from the expansive porch at the back of the house, where the owners love to sit with their guests and enjoy long views across the grass to the water, with the town of St. Michaels visible in the distance. This gathering spot is also a place for the family to play games on summer evenings, while the lawn is large enough to accommodate tents for weddings and other large-scale events.

Arentz worked to create a sense of flow on the property, ensuring easy access to all the activities the family enjoys, from swimming to boating to relaxing on the porch. Existing loblolly pines stretch high into the sky, encircling the landscape and providing a stabilizing buffer between the yard and the shoreline. Arentz’s team further anchored the site by planting a mixture of hollies and trees that offer shade.

The majestic loblollies are a beautiful backdrop to a wide border of perennial flowers bursting with color and texture. This garden overflows with vibrant blooms: lilies, coneflowers, nepeta, hyssop and baptisia are punctuated by tall spikes of acanthus and softened by both large and dwarf varieties of billowy limelight hydrangea. “The perennial border is really geared to the summer months of entertaining, which is high season for the owners,” Arentz notes.

The eastern part of the property lends itself to the family’s favorite water pastimes. There is a dock from which to launch boating, crabbing, sailing and fishing expeditions, with a cottage nearby that stores fishing equipment. And when they’re not out plying the river, the residents can take advantage of water a little closer to home in the form of an expansive swimming pool with a pool house beside it.

Complete with a kitchen, bathroom and changing rooms, the pool house was designed to reflect the look of the portico and pergola attached to the main residence. A deep covered area anchored by columns faces the pool; its overhang makes al fresco dining a breeze—it’s the perfect spot for a crab feast, perhaps. Umbrellas positioned on the wide bluestone pool surround offer shady perches with views of the river beyond the loblollies.

Throughout the property, Arentz devised opportunities to meander along bluestone paths and walkways, with scenic resting spots where the owners can pause to admire garden beds or enjoy refreshments. Among other destinations, the paths lead to a guest house and tennis court—popular hubs along the site’s eastern spine. Though there’s a lot of structure and order to the property, notes Arentz, “you don’t feel it as you move from one spot to the next. The landscape feels effortless.”

Homeowners with a faulty fountain called on Hans Bleinberger of McHale Landscape Design to fix it—beginning a close and enduring collaboration. Bleinberger went on to refine several acres of their 90-acre property—and the result was a grand retreat complete with manicured boxwood hedges, spacious lawns and walking paths connecting the ivy-covered 19th-century house with its Leeds Creek locale.

“The garden is about form, lines, and structure,” says Bleinberger. A grassy path, accented by decorative limestone plinths, English yew, and dwarf Burford holly, leads to a fountain surrounded by distinct quadrants: a rose garden, an exotic garden, a croquet lawn and a free-form “wilderness” area.

A circular lawn frames two pairs of semicircular white gravel beds in the exotic garden lined with manicured boxwood. The beds hold tropicals such as palms and citrus that bask in the sunroom in cold weather.

Bleinberger rearranged existing plants, grouping crape myrtles by color. A pink clump accents a vintage gazebo where a garden bench invites visitors to pause and enjoy the landscape. An existing Japanese snowbell in the rose garden now shines amid red knockout roses and a crimson barberry hedge.

A red-cedar allée provides shade around the perimeter of the garden. “At the end of the day,” Bleinberger says, “the purpose was a meditative garden used for walking and observing.”

When Joshua Dean of Wheat’s Landscape arrived to revamp a McLean landscape, he found a soggy yard with languishing trees and a few ferns in full sun, a pool in need of an overhaul and no focal point. The owners requested a contemporary, refined look and improved views from their kitchen window.

Now, a wisteria-covered, semicircular stone-and-wood arbor draws the eye. An existing fire pit occupies the space beneath it, adjacent to the pool deck. Lush greenery and an array of purple and pink salvia and variegated Japanese iris impart vibrant color and texture. A bank of Green Giant arborvitae provides privacy from the neighbors.

“I wanted to make sure the garden felt clean and contemporary the way the rear of the house does,” Dean says. “When you’re in any of the social spaces, it feels intimate. The purpose was to make it inviting.”

Dean regarded the site and reshaped the pool deck, replacing 2,500 square feet of concrete pavers with flagstone for an updated look. He capped the walls throughout the property with West Virginia stone. Rustic stone accents the arbor, fire pit and paths. A variegated Kousa dogwood stands out in a hedge of skip laurels, positioned to conceal pool equipment. Stained concrete containers filled with annuals add color. A play area for the owners’ kids features a lawn, paths and a portable sand table.

The owners of a home overlooking an Annapolis creek called on landscape designer Nancy Lowry Moitrier and her husband, Pierre Moitrier, to integrate disparate elements of their property. Their goal was to create a formal, French-style garden with clipped hedges and parterres, but with unexpected touches that would communicate a sense of fun.

“Their personality as a couple is gregarious and refined; they wanted a garden to reflect that,” says Lowry Moitrier. The landscape boasts a crape myrtle allée, a manicured holly hedge and boxwood parterres surrounding beds of roses. Each year, the owner plants hundreds of annuals and rare specimens such as Chartreuse Tiger Eyes sumac and Black Lace elderberry in containers throughout the property. A large Portuguese urn is the focal point of the allée, surrounded by a bed of flowers and succulents which Lowry Moitrier sometimes shapes into tapestry-like forms.

A lush perennial border of knockout roses, Autumn Joy sedum, and lady’s mantle adds lively color to the existing bluestone pool deck. Large containers display tropical smokebush, which adds dazzling color to sedum, coleus, and Agastache.

A trio of Dawn redwood trees stands 60 feet high in the entry garden. Bold tropicals such as Angel’s Trumpet add a whimsical touch. Vertical garden sculptures shaped like finials can be seen from the home’s library windows; they draw the eye out to the garden and the creek beyond. v

Clients building a custom home in Leesburg, Virginia, tapped landscape architect Chad Talton of Surrounds, Inc., to join the design team early on and create an overall outdoor plan from scratch. He helped site the house and devised a design that would regrade the flat lot to avoid drainage problems.

What was once an empty field is now an expansive,  peaceful landscape distinguished by boxwood hedges, large trees, and serene gardens—all centered around a pool and a pool house that mirrors the French Country style of the main home. “The clients wanted a very manicured space,” Talton explains. “We tried to keep it relatively clean and provide screening from other houses, but also keep it open.”

Visitors are greeted by yellow roses and an ever-changing array of annuals. Sweeping green lawns in the backyard hide a geothermal heating system while creating play space for the clients’ children. Fountain grasses, liriope, astilbe and Russian sage impart texture and color.

An allée of Natchez crape myrtles amid a bank of hydrangeas flanks the path from the garage to the backyard. A fountain beckons visitors making their way to the pool in back.

The pool house, designed by Talton, features stone accents and a tongue-and-groove pine ceiling. It houses a wet bar, refrigerator and changing rooms. Travertine keeps the pool deck cool, with bluestone edging for contrast. Integrated lighting and arcs of water from built-in deck jets enhance the ambiance.

Award: Grand, Total Residential Contracting (Design/Build). Architecture & Construction: Creighton Enterprises, Inc., Leesburg, Virginia. Landscape Architecture: Chad Talton, RLA, ASLA, Surrounds, Inc., Sterling, Virginia. Pool & Fountain Basin: Town & Country Pools, Inc., Springfield, Virginia.

French Country Style Clients who commissioned Creighton Enterprises to build their new house in Leesburg, Virginia, wanted the grounds to reflect the home’s French Country home design style. They hired landscape architect Chad Talton, who created a clean-lined, modern plan that also complements the home’s interiors.

Travertine patios and gravel walkways lined with Select Blue flagstone provide striking accents amid sweeping green lawns and formal gardens. A custom granite fountain enhances an entry courtyard delineated by stone pillars, while a palette of white blooms and green arborvitae and boxwood conveys elegance. “White flowers with an evergreen backdrop have a crisp, clean look,” observes Talton. He also planted snowdrift astilbe, viburnum, limelight hydrangea, plus Deodar cedar and magnolia for year-round interest.

A gravel path along an allée of white-flowering Natchez crape myrtle leads from the garage to the backyard. With its stone base and curving roof, the pool house echoes the architecture of the home. Inside, there’s a sitting area, a kitchen with a  stone range hood and changing rooms. A pedestal fountain sits nearby.

The pool mimics the straight lines of the terraces. It boasts a large travertine patio for entertaining. Dramatic sprays of water arc out from concealed deck jets.

The Great Outdoors During the remodel of a grand Alexandria, Virginia, house, the owners tapped Botanical Decorators to create a landscape to match, with a historical feel, spacious lawn and places suitable for large-scale entertaining.

Most of the land was in front of the house. “We created powerful geometry and a real pull towards the front with a formal flower garden and fountain centerpiece,” landscape designer Morgan Washburn explains.  The property also encompasses a pool, pool house and sprawling lawns bordered with shrubbery and flowering trees.

The garden, between the house and pool, offers an elegant setting for parties. Guests mingle among tree hydrangea, standard lilac, boxwood, Russian sage, salvia, and Persicaria. Flagstone steppers edged with mondo grass surround the pool, while the pool house is actually two structures containing a changing room and kitchen, connected by a seating area and brick fireplace.

Dogwood, redbud, Sweet Bay magnolia and weeping cherries offer low-maintenance color throughout the year. Romantic Deodar cedars evoke the look of Spanish moss for the owners, who hail from Richmond and New Orleans.

Brick pillars adorned with gaslights and wrought-iron fencing create a stately side entry. A flagstone terrace atop the garage is a unique perch on which to relax and watch the kids playing below.

Natural Backdrop When clients called McHale Landscape Design to refresh their Easton property in time for their daughter’s summer wedding, the job entailed a list of tasks that included creating suitable sites for the wedding and reception; shielding the home from the road; revamping weedy beds, and replacing the dated kidney-shaped pool. “It came down to the wire,” observes project manager Keith Bowman.

Working closely with the owners, Bowman and Steve McHale delivered a sleek, rectangular pool, gardens, flagstone terraces and a welcoming driveway lined with flowering trees.

A “Two for the Shore” sign set amid flowing grasses greets guests as they arrive. Redbud, dogwood and Green Giant arborvitae trees screen the home from the road; they provided a natural backdrop for the wedding reception on the lawn.

A mix of flowing grasses and colorful hydrangea offers texture and color to the sweeping lawns. A cutting garden near the new flagstone terrace in front offers 20 varieties of herbs in addition to perennials. Large containers hold colorful mixes of coleus, lantana, begonias and calla lilies.

The new pool is visible from the house through floor-to-ceiling windows. Beside it, a new flagstone patio and wooden deck offer sunbathing space.

Anchored by a grassy area, a picturesque wooden dock is bordered by cattails with a fire pit close by.

Classic Design After installing a brick archway and stone waterfall for a repeat client, Live Green Landscapes was asked to add a series of outdoor “rooms” to the Reisterstown, Maryland, property. Collaborating with landscape designer Scott Brinitzer, Live Green’s Aaron Raines and Jesse Chenitz wove new and existing elements together to create a lush, classic landscape that unites the house and gardens and provides the family with areas to gather, dine and play. “We ended up with six different garden experiences that all seem to coexist naturally,” Brinitzer says.

An outdoor kitchen and seating area provide a spot for dining al fresco. A few steps below, a large flagstone terrace and adjacent dark-stained pergola are perfect for entertaining and relaxing under the trees.

Sculpted evergreen shrubs and hawthorns complement the Colonial-style home’s formal lines and brick façade. The existing archway—a replica of one found at Mount Vernon—is anchored to the landscape by a matching wall. A gravel path leads to a formal cutting garden filled with perennials and roses.

Walls crafted from Western Maryland stone keep the elements separate; just beyond the cutting garden, a waterfall by the new stone terrace burbles. Newly planted holly, viburnum, redbud, and hydrangea add pops of color and year-round food for the birds.
