Cachet- What Hue Inspires You and More

What Hue Inspires You?

Color was the focal point of the 2008 Spring Design House at The Washington Design Center. Nine design teams created spaces that revolved around color, some using it sparingly and others going bold. One of the standouts was Paprika Passion, the foyer by McMaster Wallace Interiors. Designers Matthew Swingly and Jenny Dodd enveloped the room in Farrow & Ball’s new Terre D’Egypte paint color and furnished it with complementary leather and upholstered pieces. A silver-leaf GRA suspension pendant and black-and-white photos of steamy Hollywood moments add contrast.

In the Black Splash living room, David Herchik of JDS Designs played with shades of blue, black and white in this minimal space highlighted by modern artwork and kitschy elements, such as the Vivienne Westwood pillows depicting a large mouth on the Donghia daybed.

Explore the lifestyle and architecture of America's hunt country in Kathryn Masson’s newest book, Hunt Country Style. A long-time resident of Virginia’s hunt country, Masson spotlights 20 residences located in scenic rural spots throughout the U.S. Readers can tour an award-winning thoroughbred horse-breeding farm, a National Historic Landmark estate and a restored residence highlighting the work of Thomas Jefferson, the founding father of Classical architecture. Hunt country style evolved from the English country vernacular and celebrates open landscapes, natural building materials and equestrian touches. Rizzoli International, New York, NY, May 2008; $55.

As working at home has become more common, designers have faced the task of incorporating innovative work areas into their clients’ residences. Washington-based architectural writer and design critic Deborah K. Dietsch profiles 30 extraordinary home offices from traditional reading rooms to painting studios in her book, Live/Work: Working at Home, Living at Work. These creative spaces, ranging in size from colossal areas taking up an entire floor to quaint retreats tucked away in backyards or garages, all achieve a natural balance between life and work. Abrams, New York, NY, May 2008; $35.
