An Elegant Solution

Best of Class - Medium Kitchen

An Elegant Solution When DC interior designer Mary Douglas Drysdale was tasked with a whole-house renovation, the cramped, dark kitchen posed a challenge. On the owners’ wish list: greater efficiency; open counter space; a comfortable eating area; surfaces for artwork; and less focus on individual appliances. Also, since the new kitchen would open into the adjoining, refurbished dining room, the goal was to seamlessly integrate the two rooms.

Drysdale’s elegant, monochromatic design emphasizes an extensive island topped with marble-like Cambria. The cabinetry reaches the ceiling, where crown molding extends into the dining room, unifying the spaces. On white walls, art in shades of black pops, while white appliances blend with the cabinetry so the kitchen feels simple and streamlined.
