Los Angeles-based artist Suchitra Mattai creates layered textile installations, sculptures, collages and paintings by combining richly colored saris, vintage needlepoints, book pages, jewelry, tinsel, beads and other found objects. The NMWA’s spotlight on 40 of her mixed-media and textile installations explores how memory, myth and visual culture can counter colonial and patriarchal narratives.
