Teak wood slats warm the palette.
At 225-square-feet, the spacious layout of this Arlington, Virginia, bathroom always worked despite its dated materials and builder-grade fixtures. As part of a recent remodel, designer Jennifer Gilmer transformed it into something more unique: An exquisite free-standing MTI Ruby Tub in an ebony hue nudged out the sunken platform tub, while dark-gray custom storage with an integrated dressing table replaced superfluous floating shelves. All cabinetry, including the white-lacquered vanities, is from Gilmer’s signature line.
Porcelanosa tiles in neutral tones now define three separate zones for the tub, vanity and shower/WC area. The tub end features Samoa Antracita tiles to complement the moody cabinetry, while the vanity area is delineated by Xtone’s Glem White floor tiles and high-gloss vanities.
To balance the cool porcelain and warm up the palette, Gilmer introduced teak wood slats. These create a feature wall at the tub but continue across the ceiling and line the walls throughout the vanity area. “This choice created a nice balance and completed the composition,” she notes.
