Inspired by George Washington’s gristmill in nearby Mount Vernon, this 10,123-square-foot Alexandria home by Mode4 Architecture nods to its historic neighborhood while possessing a thoroughly contemporary spirit. Stone forms are linked by a modern, steel-and-glass spine. River-facing terraces, indoor-outdoor living spaces and flex areas are designed for multigenerational use. Sustainability strategies include passive cross ventilation, high-performance glazing and stormwater reuse.
